International Symposium on Education Reform 2006
Save children from the risk of violence in school
- Based on the follow-up study and international comparisons- |

1 Overview |
In 1996, National Institute for Educational Research [NIER: present National Institute for Educational Policy Research] held “International Symposium on the Problem of Bullying”co-hosted with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports [present Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology]. Since then, the NIER has been conducting the follow-up study on bullying and other problematic behaviour of children for 6 years. In 2003, on the basis of these studies, the NIER has also started to conduct a cross-national study with Canada, South Korea, and Australia where the problem of bullying has been recognised recent years. This cross-national study aimed to find out the relationships between bullying behaviour and children's relationships with friends, families, and teachers, and the nature and the extent of children's aggressive behaviour including bullying. The results are currently analysed.
The problem of bullying can be considered a first sign of other, more serious, problematic behaviour. By taking proper actions against bullying problem, we could reduce the extent of children's problematic behaviour as a whole, and could save the children from the risk of conducting and/or becoming a target of such behaviour.
In this symposium, based on the results of empirical studies, we introduce the nature and the extent of bullying in Japan [known as “Ijime”] by comparing and contrasting to bullying in other countries, and we will discuss what we can do to save the children from the risk of such problematic behaviour including bullying, at the levels of administration, the school personnel, the guardian, and the researchers.
